A Discussion in Binghamton on Transgender Issues

The Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier hosted a presentation this evening on transgender issues.

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce Jenner, brought a great deal of publicity to this issue.

A speaker at tonight's event says Jenner does not represent the average transgender american because she has the money, power and support to transition and keep acceptance among peers.

Experts say this is one more reason we must be educated on transgender issues.

Patricia Jordan, social worker, says, "Gender originates in the brain. It has nothing to do with external genitalia at all and it is not a choice for transgender people. People are uncomfortable about being open about their gender, simply because there's a stigma."

The publicity that Caitlyn Jenner brought to the transgender community was important.

However, Jordan believes that more must be done for transgender Americans to become accepted in our nation and are able to avoid problems such as bullying.
