Fiala Unveils Jobs Plan. Akshar Campaign Responds

By Fox 40 Staff.
Senate candidates Barbara Fiala and Fred Akshar are talking about jobs.

Fiala toured a pair of Johnson City businesses Tuesday as she unveiled her jobs plan. She says she would be best to lobby for the Southern Tier in it's effort to secure $500 million from Albany in the Upstate Revitalization Competition.

Fiala is also calling to reduce taxes on small business from 6.5 percent to 2.5 percent, and helping counties deal with unfunded mandates. Akshar was unavailable for comment on Fiala's plan but his surrogates say Fiala's tenure as county executive saw employment losses and tax increases. They also say Fiala's plan is similar to Akshar's.

"We have a beautiful community. It's a wonderful place to raise a family. We have a lot of good schools and we need jobs to keep (students) here," said Fiala.

"Put them side-by-side and she's taking Fred's plan and trying to make it her own. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so I guess we'll take that as a compliment," said Broome County GOP Chairman Bijoy Datta.

Both are calling for the elimination of the Energy Tax Surcharge with both claiming that would save New Yorkers $125 million.
