Jannis's late bump derails B-Mets

READING, PA – The Reading Fightin Phils rode a seventh-inning, go-ahead single by Harold Martinez to a 2-1 victory over the Binghamton Mets on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. Reading clinched the Eastern Division regular season title with the victory. The B-Mets and Fightins will meet in the Eastern Division Championship Series starting Wednesday, September 9 in Binghamton.

Mickey Jannis and the B-Mets came within an out of taking a one-run lead into the eighth inning. With the bases clear in the seventh, Dylan Cozens started a two-out rally by chopping an infield single up the middle, beating LJ Mazzilli’s throw by a half-stride. Jannis walked Angelo Mora and uncorked a wild pitch, prompting both runners to advance. With two in scoring position, Martinez threaded a 3-1 knuckleball into left field, pushing Reading ahead.

Ethan Martin and Jannis had set the tone for a pitchers’ duel by matching zeroes through the first five innings. Martin no-hit Binghamton and allowed just two to reach on a walk and a hit batter. Jannis struck out the side in the first and surrendered a solitary single in the fourth inning.

TJ Rivera snapped the scoreless game with a solo homer off reliever Ryan O’Sullivan with one out in the sixth. The B-Met shortstop extended his season-high hitting streak to 14 games and finally pushed Binghamton into the hits column with his fifth homer of the year.

With Binghamton down a run in the ninth, Jonathan Galvez ripped a two-out triple to the right-field alley, narrowly beating the relay throw by Mora. Reading closer Stephen Shackleford bounced back to retire Xorge Carrillo, securing his 29th game of the season.

Jannis (0-2) struck out seven over seven innings in the losing effort. The righty walked two, allowed three hits and threw three wild pitches. O’Sullivan (2-2) tossed two innings of relief to earn the win.

The B-Mets (75-62) open the final series of the regular season at NYSEG Stadium on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Robert Gsellman takes the mound against LHP Steve Brault.
