Nigel Smith Murder Trial Verdict: Guilty

"There are no swans in a sewer" is how prosecutor Kevin Dooley summarized this case in closing arguments last Friday, and that phrase held true for the jury today.

Despite defense efforts to discredit witnesses because of their history of crime and drug abuse their testimony along with phone records was enough in the eyes of the jury to convict nigel smith in the murder of Bretnie "Sha" Owens in Binghamton in June of 2013.

"Cases are won and lost on the testimony of witnesses and other evidence that the corroborates testimony of those witnesses and we felt that the phone evidence in this case was very compelling in terms of corroborating the testimony of the witnesses that we had." - assistant district attorney Kevin Dooley.

Smith's family was in the courtroom when the verdict was read. they refused to comment, as did Smith's attorney.

Smith's co-defendant, Calvin Bell was acquitted of the murder and robbery of Owens in June. smith is guilty of murder in the second degree, robbery in the first degree, criminal trespassing and resisting arrest.

He faces 15 years to life in state prison. Smith is due to be sentenced on November 17th.
