A Look At Some Fun Happenings In The Region

It is August and a lot of fun is being had in our region. Here's a look at at least some of it!

West Corners Fire Company celebrated over 95 years of service with an august ice cream social. For only one dollar, attendees got a huge bowl of a summer favorite...ice cream.

The Gala of the Royal Horses is coming to the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton on Friday, which will feature horses of exotic breeds from around the world performing all kids of equestrian entertainment. The traveling trainers stopped by Fox 40 for a sneak preview

For the past two months, families with young children just learning to read have been promoting literacy, thanks to Building Brighter Futures for Broome, a coalition that's been working with the Broome County Public Library and a variety of sponsors to spark children's interest in reading. The celebration today featured therapy dogs, story time and even Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The Discover Center is hoping mini-golf will do maximum good for kids. The center began it's Discovery Golf - Golf Fore Good event today at the Oakdale Mall. Proceeds will go to the center's scholarship program to help kids afford the fun and learning at the Discovery Center.

"We've had almost 50 people. Kids, little kids, babies in carriages, everybody falling into it because it's a wonderful project for a pretty great cause. It's for our scholarship fund," said Discovery Center Executive Director Pokey Crocker.

The Broome County Legislature hosted a Tomato Throwdown! It was a cooking/baking competition, using tomatoes of course. A group named Citizen U Youth won best in show.
