B-Mets lose third straight in 3-1 loss to New Britain

NEW BRITAIN, CT – The Binghamton Mets struck out a dozen times and stranded nine runners in a 3-1 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats on Saturday night at New Britain Stadium. The B-Mets went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and were held to two runs or fewer for the third time in four games. Vince Belnome provided an RBI single in the sixth, Binghamton’s long offensive highlight.

A fielding error by LJ Mazzilli at second base opened the door for the Rock Cats in the first inning. Following a two-out single by Ryan Casteel, Jordan Patterson ripped a single off Matt Koch’s foot to bring in New Britain’s first run.

The Rock Cats tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Joey Wong bounced an RBI single over Vince Belnome’s glove at first to plate Jan Vazquez and David Dahl skipped an RBI single off the lip of the infield grass to elude Mazzilli at second.

Binghamton failed to push a run across against Major League rehabber Chad Bettis. Gavin Cecchini led off the game with a double and Joe Benson followed with a walk, but Binghamton stranded both runners. Bettis tossed a perfect second, stranded two more in the third and registered the first out of the fourth.

Ryan Arrowood grabbed the ball and retired the first six he faced before issuing a pair of one-out walks in the sixth. Belnome cut the deficit to two by poking an RBI single down the left-field line. Binghamton loaded the bases on a fielding error by Pat Valaika at short, but Arrowood slammed the door by retiring Mazzilli and Albert Cordero to end the threat.

Tyler Ybarra left a runner aboard and struck out two in a blank seventh. Sam Moll fanned three and worked around Belnome’s single in a scoreless eighth. Carlos Estevez earned his eighth save and guided the Rock Cats to their third straight win with a perfect ninth.

Koch (4-7) was tagged for three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 5-2/3 innings in his third straight loss. Arrowood (1-2) gave up one run over 2-2/3 innings to earn the victory.

The B-Mets (64-54) conclude their final regular season visit to New Britain Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM. RHP Tyler Pill takes the mound against LHP Harrison Musgrave.
