Cannonsville Reservoir Returns to Normal Operations
By Jason Weinstein. Operation at Cannonsville Reservoir have returned to normal according to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. This comes almost three weeks after residents in Deposit expressed their concerns to members of the agency.
The DEP says it struck Groundwater under natural pressure while drilling for a future hydroelectric plant. DEP officials say they were doing test drilling and one hole was drilled too deep which mobilized water and carried sediment into the reservoir.
The DEP says the discharge was successfully halted on August 1st when a series of relief wells began pumping groundwater from the aquifer that was carrying the sediment to the river. Crews began phase two of repairs Monday. This will seal shut the original boreholes.
