Kids, Police Meet on Basketball Court

Some kids in Binghamton are getting to know police in a more personal and playful way.

The Binghamton Police Department is sending some of its Officers to Columbus Park to play Basketball and enjoy a Barbecue with local children. It's made possible by the Lourdes Youth Service's Program, called Binghamton Community and Schools Together.

The goal is to curb youth violence in the area, as well as to have children get to know Police on a more personal level, by showing how police care about them and the community.

"You can actually see while they're playing ball in that couple of hours, that little bit of time, theres been a change, and they're joking and they're laughing and it allows the kids to see the officers care about them and the community." - Ralphalla Richardson, Lourdes Youth Services Supervisor.

The event today also included facepainting and ladderball. A grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice funded the program.
