Humane Society Hosts 5th Annual Duck Derby

Hundreds of people are betting on some rubber duckies and the money will benefit some animals in need.

Sunday, the Broome County Humane Society held their 5th annual Duck Derby at the Holiday Inn Arena in Binghamton.

Hundreds came out to the event with more than 20 local vendors.
Organizers say they were able to reach their goal of having more than 10,000 adopted rubber ducks in the slip-and-slide style race.

The top three winners for the race won cash prizes.

Proceeds from today's race will go towards things like veterinary and maintenance costs at the shelter.

"With our recent rescue of Shih Tzus that surely goes a long way in providing for the vet care and things that they need. But we have animals all year round, we save over 700 animals every single year. So these events are what keep us running. We're non-profit, we get no funding, so it's a good thing for us. Our community is very supportive and they know there's a need for the animals so it's just rewarding," said Executive Director of the Humane Society Karen Matson.

The Humane Society's next event will be a golf tournament in September.
