Fireworks on and off the field as B-Mets beat Sea Dogs

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets provided the fireworks, riding two home runs to a 5-2 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. Gavin Cecchini hit a grand slam in the second inning, before Aderlin Rodriguez added his ninth home run in the seventh. Michael Fulmer turned in another good outing, earning his third win of the season.

Portland scored first, getting some help from the B-Mets in the second frame. With two outs and a runner on second, Aneury Tavarez struck out on a ball in the dirt. Having to complete the strike out, Xorge Carrillo airmailed the throw to first base, allowing Manuel Margot to score and Tavarez to get to third base. Fulmer stranded Tavarez at third after inducing a ground ball from Jake Romanski.

With one out in the bottom of the second, the B-Mets loaded up the bases on a walk, a single, and a Jantzen Witty error at third base. William Cuevas got Jared King to sky a shallow fly ball to left field for out number two, keeping the runners put. With one out to get, Gavin Cecchini skied a fly ball to left field that just cleared the wall and the outstretched arm of Tavarez for the grand slam. It was Cecchini’s sixth home run of the season.

Portland got a run back in the top of the third after a pair of doubles off of Fulmer. Cole Sturgeon doubled to right to begin the frame, and was brought home on a two-out double from Jantzen Witte into the left field corner. Fulmer stranded the man at second, as the Sea Dogs went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Fulmer allowed just two total baserunners in his final three innings of work. Adam Kolarek was the first man out of the bullpen, tossing a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

With one out in the seventh, and Mike McCarthy on the mound, Aderlin Rodriguez drilled a fly ball to left-center field for his ninth home run of the season. Rodriguez homered for the second consecutive game, giving Binghamton a 5-2 lead.

After a single and a strikeout, Matt Koch came on to relieve Kolarek. Witte greeted Koch with a single to bring the potential game-tying run to the plate with one out in the eighth. Koch proceeded to retire Sam Travis on a soft liner to first base, and froze Keury De La Cruz on an inning-ending strike three.

Jon Velasquez came in and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to shut the door, earning his ninth save of the season.

Fulmer (3-1) allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings. He struck out eight, while allowing five total baserunners. Cuevas (7-5) took the loss, allowing four unearned runs in five innings.
