Runners Get "Powdered" for 4th!

Some folks are being colored red, white and blue for the Independence Day holiday!

This morning the 2nd annual Colors of Freedom 5K Run/Walk was held at Highland Park.

Despite rainy weather, more than 250 runners were covered in patriotic-themed powder.

The event was held for those who have helped to fight for our country -- the veterans! Participants were able to write the name of a service of member -- past or present -- on their t-shirts in honor of their commitment.

"I think it's nice because it shows, even though the weather is bad, our community does support our veterans and does support our service personnel. You know, they sacrifice so much for us and I think it shows our community is willing to come out on days like this and give a little sacrifice for ourselves to honor them," said Deputy Commissioner of Public Works Recreation for Town of Union Tom Cassin.

Today's event raised more than 10-thousand dollars and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group.
