State Police Search for Prison Escapees

New York State Police are on the hunt for two escaped prisoners -- one responsible for the death of a Broome County Sherriff's deputy.

New York State Police say they received a call Saturday morning just before 6:00 from the Clinton Correctional Facility regarding two unaccounted prisoners.

The two men are identified as Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34. Matt is serving a sentence of 25 years to life following a conviction of three counts of murder, kidnapping and robbery.

Sweat is serving a sentence of life without parole following his conviction in Broome County for murder for the death of a Broome County Sheriff's deputy in 2002.

The two men are said to have gotten ahold of power tools-- and drilled their way through steel walls and tunnels Saturday morning.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says hundreds of law enforcement personnel are looking for the two and he also urges the public to keep an eye out...

Both men are considered dangerous. Police say if you come into contact with either of these men do not approach them, just call 911 or State Police at 518-563-3761.
