Schumer Urging DEA to Keep Drug Disposal Program

Senator Charles Schumer is urging The New York State Drug Enforcement Agency to continue one of it's programs which he says reduces crime and saves lives.

Schumer is asking the New York State DEA to immediately reverse it's discontinuation of the National Prescription Take Back Days. The program collects and safely disposes of hundreds of thousands of prescription drugs from upstate New Yorkers.

According to The Centers for Disease Control, nationwide 70% of those addicted to prescription drugs get them from homes. Pharmacies and hospitals do host prescription drug take backs, but they are still working to develop ways to best provide that service.

In the meantime, Schumer says New Yorkers need a safe place to dispose of their prescription drugs. According to the NYS Poison Control, this year in the Southern Tier there have been 88 opioid overdoses.
