Department of Public Arts Hangs Murals on Blighted Properties

Some public art volunteers are trying to spruce up some blighted properties in Binghamton.

Saturday several volunteers took to Chenango Street to hang murals painted by artists during the city's Mural Fest.

Twelve 4x8 panels were hung on a boarded property it's all part of the Department of Public Art initiative, "Blight as our Canvas."

The department received a $5,000 grant from the Chenango County Arts Council to make this year's project possible.

Volunteer Shawna Stevenson said, "As the Department of Public Art we have agreements with some property owners where they once had boarded-up windows. So were hoping to beautify the neighborhood and bring awareness to the arts."

The murals on Chenango Street is the first project for the Department of Public Art this year. Any business or home owners interested in having murals posted on their properties you can head over to www.binghamtonbridge.org.
