Gold Star Mom Remembers Son on Memorial Day

By Beth Rousseau.
As the nation spends the day celebrating those who made the ultimate sacrifice Fox 40 spoke one local mom who spends Memorial Day and every other day remembering and honoring her son.

Gold Star Mom Barbara Bilbrey says, "I miss him everyday, everyday."

Memorial Day holds special significance for Barbara Bilbrey.

In 2007 her son Charles was killed while serving the United States Army in Iraq, he was just 21 years old.

Bilbrey says, "He was full of life and had an incredible sense of right and wrong."

According to Bilbrey the support of the Tioga County community since Charles' death has helped her family heal.

Memorial Day Chairman Jim Raftis says, "Owego and Tioga County never forgets her veterans."

For almost 50 years, community members have gathered on Memorial Day to remember Tioga County's service men and women, who like Charles, lost their lives in the line of duty.

U.S. Navy Veteran William Kocik says, "This is in remembrance of all the ones that died and I'm very thankful for them that we live here in the United States and what they did, what they gave up."

Charles' name is one of 170 soldiers listed at the Tioga County Veterans Memorial.
