Vestal Police Warn of IRS "Phishing" Scam

Vestal Police are warning residents about a scam by people claiming to be from the IRS. The scammer will alter their phone number to make it seem as though it is from the IRS or Washington, D.C.

Police say the scammers threaten people with criminal charges if they don't pay money owed as the result of an audit. Police say the IRS will contact you by mail first. You also have the opportunity to question or appeal a penalty.

The agency will also not ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone or threaten to call local police. To report the scam you should call the Treasury Inspector General at 800-366-4484. You can also file a complaint with the federal trade commission at ftc.gov. You can also get that contact info on our website, wicz.com.
