Oakdale Mall Celebrates National EMS Week

It's National Emergency Medical Squad (EMS) Week and the Southern Tier is getting a look inside those emergency vehicles.

Saturday, the Susquehanna Regional EMS Council sponsored a floor show in the Oakdale Mall featuring ambulances and emergency vehicles from several local emergency response organizations including Vestal Volunteer Emergency Squad, Union Volunteer Emergency Squad, Broome County C.O.A.D. Broome County Office of Emergency Services and Susquehanna River Region 211.

More than 400 people showed up to catch a glimpse of the vehicles between Saturday and Friday.

Organizers say the vehicles play a major role in helping emergency personnel save lives.

"The vehicles we use are incredibly high tech. Everything from the lights and sirens that everyone sees to cardiac monitors on the inside with all kinds of medications and medical equipment. And we have the ability to provide a vast number of medical treatments, very similar to things that happen in emergency departments, right in the back of the ambulance, right in the people's driveways, on the side of the street, inside their homes; to bring care to patients faster," said Executive Director of the Regional EMS Council Richard Blackley.

National EMS Week runs through May 23rd.
