Local Group Aims to Raise Awareness about Youth Homelessness
It's a surprising reality about the homeless population in the Southern Tier: most of them are children.
The Southern Tier Homeless Coalition hosted a public forum addressing the effects of homelessness on youth and families tonight at the Broome County Library.
Six panelists from local program providers were there to answer questions regarding the increasing concern of youth homelessness.
According to the coalition, just under 650 youth were reported to have experienced homelessness in Broome County during the 2012-2013 school year.
"There are a number of adverse childhood long term effects as a result of experiencing homelessness in youth and as a child among a family experiencing instabilities," said Rebecca Rathmell, Chair of the Community Awareness Committee.
