Elderly Woman Escapes Montrose Blaze

A woman in her 90s was able to escape a fire in Montrose, Pennsylvania Monday afternoon.

The call came in after 2:30 at 164 Lake Ave. David Bertsch said his mother Sarah Bertsch owns the home. Crews from at least seven departments responded, including Montrose, Silver Lake, and Vestal.

The cause hasn't yet been determined but the fire appears to have started on the exterior of the first floor before extending to the attic and spreading from there. The Fire Chief says the home was one of the oldest in Montrose.

"It got to a third alarm so we had quite a few crews here. Extinguishment was very difficult with the older home, the construction of the home. It took quite a bit to get it under control," said Montrose Fire Chief Mike Hinds.

David Bertsch says his family moved to Montrose in the early '60s.
