Local Fire Departments Recruit Volunteers

Do you think you have what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter? Well, local fire stations are asking for your help.

More than 30 local volunteer fire departments, including the East Maine, Chenago Bridge, Endwell Fire and others held an open house Saturday in efforts to attract residents to become volunteer firefighters.

According to officials, the ranks of volunteer firefighters is decreasing each year and in many areas the need is critical.

The age of volunteers can range from 16 and up. Officials say that there are also more ways to volunteer than having to go in and fight the fire.

"You may be a mechanic, you may be a carpenter. You can help us understand some building constructions, some electrical emergencies, you could maybe help us do maintenance on our trucks. Just general preventive maintenance, we're not overhauling engine, just oiling, greasing, tighten up things. Sometimes we just don't have the time to do all of those things to make sure everything is in top-operational condition," said President of Broome County Firefighter's Association Rob Brady.
