BU's Rutherford named America East Rookie of the Week

VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman outfielder Jessica Rutherford has been named the America East Rookie of the Week. It marks the first time in her career that she has earned the conference's weekly accolade.

Rutherford hit .467 with a home run and nine RBI in Binghamton's five games this past week, all of which came against America East opponents. She finished the week with a .526 OBP and an .867 slugging percentage.

In the Bearcats' doubleheader against UMass Lowell on Tuesday, Rutherford was 3-for-7 with a home run. She followed up by going 3-for-8 in the three-game series against Albany this past weekend. Her biggest hit was a three-run triple in the Bearcats' 11-6 win over the Great Danes on Sunday.

"Jessica has been really consistent for us at the plate throughout the season and also has made a huge impact in the field as well," head coach Michelle Burrell said. "She has great instincts for the game and always gives it her all. Her consistency is impressive for how young she is and she will just continue to improve because of her work ethic."

Rutherford is the second BU player this season to earn Rookie of the Week honors. Freshman third baseman Kate Richard was selected back on Feb. 17.

For the season, Rutherford is batting .330 with two home runs and 20 RBI.

Binghamton (14-16, 5-5 AE) travels to Colgate on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
