American Heart Association Holds "Run for Your Heart 5K"

After last week's Heart Walk, the American Heart Association is getting hearts racing again.

The American Heart Association held their third annual "Run for Your Heart 5K" at the Vestal Coal House. More than 100 participants laced up their running shoes to take on the Vestal Rail Trail.

Proceeds from the race go toward assisting the American Heart Association to reduce two leading causes of death: heart disease and stroke.

"When you hear the survivors come up to your table or talk to you after an event is over, just about what it means to them to see everybody come out and support them, it's overwhelming," said Director of Southern Tier American Heart Association Gina Chapman.

After the race runners were treated to refreshments and winners of each age group received gift certificates donated by local businesses. The event raised more than $1,000.
