Students Participate in Odyssey of the Mind Tournament at BU

Thousands of students all across New York State are showing off their creative skills at Binghamton University.

It's all part of the 36th annual Odyssey of the Mind State Finals Tournament. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten all the way to college. Nearly 5,000 students were a part of the competition.

Students apply their creative and problem solving skills to things from building mechanical devices to literary classic interpretations. Officials say this tournament helps to expand the students' learning horizons.

"Odyssey of the mind is one of those things that allows kids to think outside of the box and I think in today's society where they are so pigeon holed into doing this and doing that, this is a way
for them to just really be creative," said state director of Odyssey of the Mind Jerry Mottern.

"It really gets your brain to think and it's fun to work together with your teammates. This is my fourth year doing it and my first year going to State's, so if we make it to World's I'm going to be really happy," said 5th grade student Valerie Haddae.

The first and second place winner of each division will be eligible to participate in the Odyssey of the Mind world tournament in Michigan State University this May.
