Using Tai Chi to Help Prevent Falls for the Elderly

The Better Balance Project for Broome County is using the martial art of Tai Chi to help prevent falls for older adults.

The national Center for Disease Control and Prevention says Tai Chi can help those 65 and older prevent falls and relieve pain from arthritis. The Broome County Department of Health initiative is holding an advanced Tai Chi class at the Jewish Community Center in Vestal. The class is held twice a week and the exercises improve balance, fitness, and relaxation.

"There has been a big change in people at first who are timid about doing these things but have found themselves to be stronger and stronger as we go along," said Certified Instructor Gail Goldberg.

The falling rate has dropped over a four year period. There has been a ten percent decline in people over the age of 65 sustaining injuries to unexpected falls.
