Broome County Needs More Information Before Rolling Out Pilot Program
Broome County is gathering cost information to possibly give away bus passes to those enrolled in the Broome County Veteran and Drug Court programs.
The proposal by legislator Jason Garner was originally a plan to begin a pilot program in May to last until November. But at a Public Works and Transportation committee meeting Monday legislators agreed to gather more information as to the cost of the program to the county. The passes would be good only for court-mandated appointments.
"These programs divert people from being in the jail, which is extremely expensive for taxpayers. It costs us million of dollars a year to incarcerate people and it provides them with the treatment they need," said Jason Garnar, Broome County Legislative Minority Leader.
Garnar plans on having the meetings necessary to estimate costs to the county for the program over the next couple of weeks.
