Southern Tier Gets Another Chance for a Casino

The state has dealt the Southern Tier another hand to try to win a casino license.

Monday the State Gaming Commission unanimously adopted a new request for applications for a Southern Tier casino.

The applications will be due July 6th. Tioga Downs Racino in Nichols is the only known entity expected to apply for a license at this time.

That venue lost out to Lago Resorts in the Town of Tyre in the initial bidding for a casino license. The head of Tioga Downs expects a local project to be approved this time around.

"In theory they might not pick anybody but I think we all agree the intent of the law was to create jobs in the Southern Tier. The Governor came and said it. I would think that it would take an awful lot for them to just simply not. We could probably hire between 800-1,000 people within a few months," said Tioga Downs owner Jeff Gural.

Gural says he'll look to improve his application a second time around by addressing some of the concerns the board had over his financing and construction schedule.
