Congressman's Plan to Boost Local Economy

Posted:
U.S. Representative Richard Hanna outlines federal initiatives he feels will strengthen the Southern Tier economy.

Hanna was at local manufacturer Samscreen in Conklin Friday.

He hopes to increase the number of highly trained workers in the region through the STEM education opportunity act, a bill that would grant tax relief for students studying the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

Hanna says this would add highly trained workers to the pool of perspective employees for local businesses.

Representative Richard Hanna says, "There are lots of jobs in this country. We estimate there are a few thousand in the 22nd Congressional District that are available but not filled because they can't find people to do that. There is a skills gap, education is an important part of that."

Fleming says, "A company is more than just a group of machinery. It's a group of people that work together to get something done so having great members of that group allow us to become a great company."

In addition to enhancing educational opportunities Hanna highlighted initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, boosting Southern Tier exports and increasing the area's energy security and affordability.
