Frigid Temps Last Month Set New Record for Coldest February

Posted:
This just in: February was cold.

More than half of the days in the month were zero degrees or colder making this February one for the record books.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, this was the coldest February we've been through with an average temperature of 12.2 degrees.

National Weather Service Science Operations Officer Mike Evans says that an average temperature for our area during the month of February is 24 degrees.

Despite the frigid temps this past month, Evans says that he doesn't see these drastically cold winters as a new trend for our area.

"The only month in our records that go back to the 50's that has been colder has been January 1977. So for a lot of people it's definitely the coldest month that they can remember here. If anyone thinks that it wasn't a cold February they're mistaken. It was cold it really was cold," said Science Operations Officer Mike Evans.

The previous record for the coldest February was set in 1979 at 13.6 degrees.
