Health Benefits of Staying Active Despite Frigid Temperatures

Posted:
With this week's frigid temperatures, many might be hesitant to brave the outdoors

However local physicians say that staying active in freezing temperatures is critical to your health.

"The less you do, the less you want to do or the less energy you have to do, so staying active, keeping your brain active is also very important," says Dr.Michael Lavin.

Dr.Micheal Lavin, a psychiatrist at Lourdes Family Health Center, says this especially true, during winter when many experience seasonal affective disorder and depression.

His advice? Get outside.

"Just get out, bundle up, stay warm and get moving," says Lavin.

Staying active despite the frigid temperatures can benefit all aspects of your health as long as you're dress appropriately.

Dr.Diane Barton, Physiologist at Lourdes says, "You actually can be outside you just have to layer up and be aware of not only the temperature but also the wind chill."

Dr.Barton says that no matter what the activity, it's important stretch before bundling up and heading outside.

"You should stretch your entire body, especially if you're going outside to exercise you can do some hamstring stretches, stretch your legs and arms and it's also good to do some calisthenics prior to going out to get the cardiovascular system going prior to going out into the cold," says Barton.

Dr.Lavin says winter activities like skiing and snowboarding or even just walking can put you in a better mental state.

"Anything you enjoy that gets you outside, and some exposure to the limited amount of sunlight we get can only help," says Lavin.
