Recap of Section IV Wrestling Championships

Posted:
Yesterday in Division Two at the Section IV Wrestling Championships, Norwich took home the team title with 159 and a half points.

Purple Tornado Tristan Rifanburg won his decision 12-2 over Whitney Point's Nate Grubham for his sixth straight Section IV title. He is tied with Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton's Eric Decker had won six Section IV titles from 2001-06.

"It means a lot. This helps us prepare for states. It's a big tournament to win and I think Eric Decker is the only one to be a six timer so this one is special and I am excited for what's ahead," said Rifanburg.

Norwich doesn't have much rest as they prepare for the big matches in Albany.

In Division One, Newark Valley took home the title with 209 points. They just edged Vestal with 208.

One of those wrestlers who helped out was Vinnie Darpino. The senior defeated Vestal's Owen Jarrold 6-3 for his second straight title and he knows the feeling of battling with top competition in the state.

"We had a couple of guys who are pretty long who I wrestled with previously for Newark Valley who came in throughout the week and we worked very hard with that and I have wrestled with Owen before and we have always had close matches so I knew what I had to do," said Daprino.

Darpino said he is not taking any days off. He's getting back to work in the gym on Monday.
