Research Suggests Hugs Can Affect Health

Who knew there's power in a hug?

The non-verbal gesture promotes positive emotion but research also shows it could keep you from getting sick.

Carnegie Mellon University researchers claim those who experience high social support, including lots of hugs, were protected from a high risk of getting sick while under stress.

Doctors say giving hugs releases things like cortisol --a stress hormone and oxytocin a hormone that heals feelings of loneliness and anger.

Doctor Michael Lavin said, "Certain hormones are increased that actually help with our sense of immunity and our ability to fight infection I believe that's true and in general feeling good and working on our mental health has positive effects as well as our physical being."

Doctors say stress can lead to a weakened immune system and simple personal gestures can counter that stress.
