Democratic State Senate candidate Barbara Fiala held an education round table Monday in downtown Binghamton - and the number one topic on the agenda - the Common Core.

Fiala hosted the ranking Democrat on the Senate's Education Committee, George Latimer from Westchester. Both Fiala and Latimer say at this point they want to hear from educators and parents about issues such as Common Core and how the state can best fund schools.

"A lot has been said this campaign about education, about Common Core, about funding and testing, overtesting the students, and teachers need to be free to teach," said Fiala.

"One size does not fit Binghamton and Vestal and Union(-Endicott) equally well. Nor does it fit White Plains, and Bronxville, and Armonk equally well, which are communities in other parts of the state but have the same basic realities," said Latimer.

Latimer says downstate legislators do care about issues facing upstate and he would support funding for pre-k for districts struggling with poverty, rural or urban.
