Fellow Officers and Family Members Remember the Life of Officer David DW Smith

Members of the Johnson City Police Department gathered today to remember Officer David "DW" Smith.

Officer Smith was shot and killed in the line of duty one year ago today.

"I don't think anybody here expected that something like this would happen and that we would actually lose one of our own," said Johnson City Police Chief Brent Dodge.

Exactly one year ago today Johnson City Police Officer David Smith Jr. was shot and killed in the Southern Tier Imaging parking lot while responding to a call at the business.

Today officers and family members gathered in that same parking lot to honor their fallen friend.

"Guys were just in disbelief for quite some time. It was a difficult thing to accept," said Chief Dodge.

This is a sentiment echoed by local community members.

"For something like this to happen is a sorrowful thing. This poor officer went down and it really should have never happened," said Jeffrey Largue, an Endwell resident.

Police Chief Dodge says since the incident members of the department have banded together to console one another and remember Officer Smith.

"He was a friend to pretty much everybody here. Quite a jokester, very quick witted, smart guy. He will be sorely missed," said Chief Dodge.
