Senator Schumer Talks Future of Jets Training Camps

Posted:
Senator Chuck Schumer in Syracuse today, calling on the New York Jets to keep their training camp at SUNY Cortland.

There are currently talks of moving the summer training camp to the team's practice facility in Florham Park, New Jersey.

The senator says if the team moves..it could do some major damage the local economy.

"Im here to say that the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets should S-T-A-Y stay, stay, stay!"

Senator Chuck Schumer's message is loud and clear.

The three-week summer training camp brings in close to $5 million each year ..luring in football fans from all over the US, with about 22,000 fans last year alone.

SUNY Cortland's President says Schumer is responsible for bringing the football team to Cortland back in 2009.

"I said 'Do you know Woody Johnson?' He said 'We'll I'll call.' And low and behold if it wasn't for Senator Schumer the New York Jets wouldn't be here," said SUNY Cortland President Dr. Erik Bitterbaum.

But their training in Cortland could come to an end.
Schumer said, "Unfortunately, no guarantee that the Jets will be back. There is currently no agreements in place for the jets to return to SUNY Cortland and with the firing of Coach Rex Ryan who is one of the biggest advocates for holding training camp in Cortland the future is far from certain."

No decisions are expected until the Jets hire a new head coach and general manager. Those hires are expected in the next few weeks.
