Politicians Reflect on Mario Cuomo's Passing

Posted:
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has ordered flags already flying at half-staff for two slain NYPD officers to remain lowered for 30 days in honor of Cuomo.

In a written statement, President Obama called Cuomo -- "a determined champion of progressive values." Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo also said in a statement, "I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of former governor Mario Cuomo. His 1984 speech at the Democratic National Convention moved many of us to dedicate ourselves to public service. I would not be a member of the state legislature today were it not for his influence."

James Testani, now the Broome County Democratic Chair, worked for Mario Cuomo when he was appointed to Cuomo's upstate cabinet of elected officials. Testani says that the thing he remembers most about Cuomo was his intellect and tenacious work ethic.

"There was no challenge that was too great, there was no intellectual hurdle that was too high, he truly had a belief that if reasonable people sat down and talked reasonably that you could come up with good conclusions and good results," said James Testani, Broome County Democratic Committee Chair.

Testani says that Mario's true legacy lies in his son Andrew, and that Andrew shares the same dedication for the governorship that Mario did.
