DEC Gas Drilling Report Delay Frustrates - 7/28/2009

The preliminary report, released just yesterday, cites the Southern Tier as the hottest area for gas drilling in the entire country-- promising a multi-billion dollar pay off over the next decade.

But whatever the merits and accuracy of that report might be, no drilling can begin until the state releases its own report: an environmental impact statement on gas drilling.

The Department of Environmental Conservation was supposed to release a statement at the beginning of this month, but now they say it won't be available until September.

Frustrating for those, like Joint Landowners Coalition Member Dave Fendick, who wants gas drilling to begin before it's too late.

"Possibly could pull our chances of having this gas development come here.
Because it could go to other areas--we are in competition with other areas," said Joint Landowners Coalition Member David Fendick.

This is the 167-acre property of Coalition Member Dave Fendick.
He says his family has owned this property since the 1940s.

And despite other groups warnings, the Marcellus Shale Gas Drilling Process is environmentally safe and will not damage his land.

"The Binghamton Sustainability Commitee, the Sierra Club--they're just telling people fallacies.
About what's occurring with the gas drilling.
This is a different geographic area.
The environment's totally different.
it's a different type of shale play--and they're just trying to put fear into people," said Fendwick.

While Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala is still waiting on the results from the DEC's statement, she agrees with those who say that the show needs to get on the road.

"Put the resources that are necesary to get the job done.
It's an important topic--not just to the Southern Tier--but the entire New York State," said Fiala.

But will the state's environmental impact statement provide a go ahead, or a halt to what some say can be the biggest economic boom to the area in many years--
Boosters and opponents of gas drilling are awaiting the answer.
