Future Nurses Prepare For The Worst - 5/5/2009
Don't be alarmed. There wasn't a real disaster in Greater Binghamton Tuesday.
But if a gas explosion were to the happen, students at Binghamton University's Decker School of Nursing would know what to do.
"The first plan of action is to get them through the decontamination so that they can be triaged and then the triage basically they will find out how critical this patient is," said senior nursing student, Alexandra Karlgut.
Some injuries were critical.
Students treated people for missing limbs to cuts.
They even had to employ their Hazmat training to spraydown soot covered survivors.
"When they get out into the workforce, every facility is required to do drill scenarios, so as leaders, our students will be prepared," said Clinical Faculty Instructor, Margaret Contro.
Another important work skill used today? How to communicate during an emergency?
Decker students used a form of communication standard in all disaster situations.
Although this year's disaster drill simulates a gas explosions students say the real life experience is relevant with the American Civic Association Shooting still fresh in their minds.
"Going back to the American Civic Association incident, there was a lot of help there and a lot of resources and people came together, and it's extremely important for a disaster for the community to come together and that's what we saw and that's what we're seeing here," said Karlgut.
Tomorrow's nurses preparing today for a crisis no community ever expects.
