Fire Tears Through Johnson City Apartment Buidling

(Source: Fox 40 Staff)

An early morning fire injured three people as it tore through a Johnson City apartment building...

It happened at 85 Floral Ave just after three this morning. Firefighters arrived on scene to see heavy smoke coming from the building.
The fire was contained to the second floor common area, a location near where many residents looked to escape out windows.

Fire fighters made nine ladder rescues from the second floor.
witnesses say the scene of the fire was chaotic.

Johnson City resident Bruce Martin said, "like I said there were people running all over the place, people trying to get out of the building. It was just kind of like a war zone."

One of the three people sent to the hospital was a firefighter who officials say wasn't feeling well. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Red Cross has opened a shelter at a nearby church where 12 people are staying until they find more permanent housing.
