Peavey's early struggles doom B-Mets

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets spotted the New Hampshire Fisher Cats four runs in the first inning and never recovered in a 7-2 loss, on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Dustin Lawley and Brandon Nimmo each tallied two hits. The B-Mets committed four errors in the defeat.

New Hampshire started the scoring in the first inning against Greg Peavey. Jon Berti singled to start the rally. Matt Newman hit a 0-1 pitch over the right-field wall to put the road team on top by two runs. Andy Burns then doubled to keep the stanza going.  After back-to-back outs, Derrick Chung smacked a double himself to plate Burns. KC Hobson came through with a single in the next at-bat to bring Chung home and make the score 4-0.

The B-Mets broke through in the second against Casey Lawrence. T.J. Rivera led off with a double and moved third on a ground out. Jayce Boyd skied a pitch to center field to bring home Rivera and cut the deficit to 4-1.

The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth. Brian Burgamy walked and stole second base to put a runner in scoring position with nobody out for the B-Mets. After two strikeouts, Darrell Ceciliani doubled off the wall in right field to plate the runner and bring Binghamton within two, 4-2.

The Fisher Cats pulled away from there, though. In the seventh inning against Hansel Robles, Andy Fermin walked and moved to second on single by Berti. With Newman at the plate, Robles threw a pitch in the dirt. Catcher Kai Gronauer tried to nab the advancing runner at third base, but his throw went into left field. A run came home and the New Hampshire lead grew to 5-2.

The road team’s advantage was extended again in the ninth against Jack Leathersich. Berti led off with a double, his fourth hit of the day. With one out, Burns reached on a throwing error by Rivera at short. Berti came home to score on the play. Burns then stole second and crossed the plate on a Cory Aldridge single a batter later to put the Fisher Cats on top 7-2.

Lawrence (8-5) gave up two runs on eight hits in seven innings. Peavey (8-2) tossed six frames and gave up four runs on eight hits. He allowed just three hits and no runs over his final five innings. Mickey Storey shut out the B-Mets in eighth and ninth to pick up his second save. Robles and Leathersich combined to throw the final three innings of the game. They gave up a total of three runs, all of which were unearned.

The B-Mets (64-46) start a series with the Bowie Baysox on Thursday at 6:35 PM. RHP Matt Bowman goes for Binghamton opposite RHP Matt Bischoff for Bowie.
