Southern Tier Dams to Receive Millions in Federal Funding
7/30/2014 (Updated 10:49:31 PM)Eight dams in the Southern Tier, including five in Broome County, will receive almost $3 million in federal funds.
Senator Charles Schumer says the National Resources Conservation service will distribute more than $2.9 million for dam rehabilitation and safety assessments. The average dam in New York State is 60 years old, which is close to be categorized as "high hazard", and this funding can help upstate dams that are in need of repair.
Schumer says the funding will provide benefits including flood protection and drinking water.
