Local Unemployment Numbers
6/24/2014 (Updated 6:56:10 PM)Binghamton's unemployment rate fell to 6.3% in May, down from 7.5% in May of 2013.
Part of the reason for the drop, though, is a plunge in both the number of employed and unemployed people.
And the total number of nonfarm jobs fell by 1,000 positions from May of 2013 to May of 2014.
The sector in the Binghamton area that saw the biggest percentage drop in jobs was computer and electronic product manufacturing, followed by financial activities.
"What we are seeing over the month are gains in construction, leisure, and retail trade, which traditionally we see these seasonal industries ramp up into the warmer months," said Christian Harris, Labor analyst with the New York State Department of Labor.
The unemployment rate for New York State in May was 6.4%.
