Deposit Under State of Emergency After Building Collapse
6/24/2014 (Updated 6:55:48 PM)
A state of emergency is still in effect in the village of deposit after a roof collapse at a vacant former elementary school building has left it damaged, unstable, and dangerous to passersbys.
Mayor John O'Connor says the village will not condemn the building because then it would be on the hook for the demolition.
The village is pushing the owner of the building to pick up the tab.
O'connor says that the person who represents building owner Brick Building LLC has sent in a building permit and that request is sitting at this time.
"It's in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and we can't afford that and we're not going to bond for it. This is not going to be on us. We'll create the safety zone as far as danger of brick spillage. And that's as much as we're doing at this point," said Mayor John O'Connor.
The village has put up caution tape and barricades around the building to keep people from entering dangerous areas.
