Binghamton Baseball's Bill Bereszniewicz gets drafted by LA Dodgers in MLB Draft

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 28th-round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Saturday.

Bereszniewicz, a first-team all-conference player who led the America East in hitting (.367) and stolen bases (23), is the ninth Binghamton player to be drafted since 1990 and the third in the last three years. He is BU’s earliest field position player to be taken since catcher Dan Gray went to the Dodgers in the seventh round of the 1990 draft.

“I’m thrilled for Billy ... nobody has worked harder for this opportunity,” head coach Tim Sinicki said. “There is no doubt in my mind he’ll make the most of it. He turned himself into a dynamic player on both sides of the ball and was without question our most valuable player this spring.”

Bereszniewicz is fresh off a season that saw the Sudbury, Mass. native captain the Bearcats to their second consecutive America East crown and NCAA Regional appearance. He hit .401 over the last two months of the season and set the school single-season record with 77 hits.

Bereszniewicz led the conference in four offensive categories (average, hits, triples with 5, stolen bases) and also produced countless highlight-reel catches in center field. He was the lone Bearcat to start all 52 games and currently ranks 38th in the country in triples, 46th in stolen bases and 57th in batting average.
He had two double-digit hit streaks (15 and 10) and after Feb. 15, didn’t go more than one game in a row without recording a hit.

Bereszniewicz posted 24 multi-hit games, including 10 games with three or more hits. In his final collegiate games, he went 5-for-10 against No. 7 Oklahoma State and No. 19 Nebraska at the NCAA Stillwater Regional.

For his career, Bereszniewicz compiled 208 hits – sixth on BU’s all-time list. He also totaled 122 runs, 74 RBI and 42 stolen bases (second all-time).
