Fire in Conklin Paper Company

Employees at International Paper in Conklin put out an equipment fire this afternoon, leaving only smoke and a few burning embers for the fire companies who responded.

The fire happened around noon and caused employees to evacuate the Conklin Ave building for about an hour. The cause is still under investigation but Conklin's Fire Chief says a cardboard bundling machine caught fire.

"There was fire initially. They knocked it down. There were some burning embers and stuff by the time we got there so that was basically knocked down. A lot of smoke in this end of the building but we opened up the doors and hatches in the roof," said Conklin Fire Chief Bill Gorman.

Fire crews from Conklin, Kirkwood, Five Mile Point, Town of Binghamton, and Hallstead responded. Gorman says the damage to international paper was minimal. There were no injuries.
