Downtown Binghamton could soon be seeing a 38 million dollar facelift to one of its most dilapidated structures.
The proposed "Collier Street Commons" would replace the current parking ramp with a mixed-use parking, retail and residential facility.
The city is working with the Vestal-based Newman Development Group, LLC to develop the project. Mayor Rich David says he's excited to finally be on the path to redevelop the current, crumbling structure with one that would create jobs and investments.
"My attitude is that I'd rather leverage public and private investment to get a investment to get a brand new facility as supposed to investing millions of dollars every few years just to keep it in its current condition," said David.
The site is currently occupied by a parking garage built in 1960.
Newman Development Group, LLC was the only respondent to the city's request for proposal issued in April. This would be one of the largest private-public partnership in the history of downtown Binghamton.
