B-Mets get swept by Rock Cats after 6-1 loss Sunday afternoon

NEW BRITAIN, CT - The Binghamton Mets concluded a frustrating weekend visit to the Constitution State with a 6-1 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. The loss sealed a three-game sweep of the B-Mets in which they went a combined 3-for-30 with runners in scoring position and stranded 31 runners over three games.

The teams traded zeroes through the first three innings. Rock Cats starter Pat Dean stranded three while fanning four through three scoreless frames. B-Mets starter Alex Panteliodis, making his Double-A debut, faced just one over the minimum to keep pace.

Panteliodis's fate took a turn for the worse in the fourth when the first four batters of the inning all reached on singles, highlighted by Kennys Vargas' RBI hit up the middle. With the bases chock full, Mike Kvasnicka ripped a 2-0 pitch down the left-field line, clearing the bases with a double. Kyle Knudson capped the inning with an RBI single, giving New Britain a 5-0 lead.

Binghamton scratched out their only run of the game in the fifth. Nelfi Zapata led off the inning by lining a double to the left-field alley. With one out, Brian Burgamy bounced a weak groundball to third. Zapata took off for third on Brandon Waring's throw to first and then dashed home when Kenny Vargas' return throw to third sailed high.

The B-Mets had another chance in the sixth, but failed to cash in. Following Matt Clark's leadoff double, Kyle Johnson deposited a single to center. Mike Kvasnicka fired home to nail Clark at the plate, killing the B-Mets rally. Dean collected one more out in the frame before giving way to Dan Turpen for the final out of the inning.

Turpen returned with a perfect seventh and Jim Fuller fanned two in a blank eighth. Adrian Salcedo worked around a walk and single to post a scoreless ninth handing the B-Mets their fourth loss in the last five games.

Panteliodis (0-1) allowed five runs on seven hits over 3-2/3 innings in the loss. Dean (3-2) surrendered one unearned run on seven hits over 5-2/3 innings to snap an eight-game winless slump. Adam Kolarek was tagged for a run in his lone inning of relief.

The B-Mets (30-25) enjoy an off day on Monday before opening a three-game series on the road against the Altoona Curve on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. RHP Tyler Pill takes the mound for Binghamton against LHP Joely Rodriguez.
