Owego School Budget Calls for 21 Job Cuts
5/19/2014 (Updated 8:06:00 PM)The Owego-Apalachin district's budget calls for the elimination of 21 positions, 13 through layoffs and eight through attrition...
A big reason why is that district's tax cap formula allowed for a maximum levy increase of only .015 percent.
The superintendent of the district says reduced state aid is a big factor in the need to cut jobs.
"Our revenue continues to be in a situation of shortfall as it has been for the last five to six years, most importantly with cuts to state aid," said Dr. Bill Russell, superintendent of the Owego-Apalachin school district.
Russell says state aid began to recover last year, but not as much this year.
Also, the district is still behind where it was in state aid in 2008 and 2009.
