Binghamton Baseball gets 7-3 over Albany to clinch America East Tournament spot

ALBANY, N.Y. - Freshman pitcher Nicholas Liegi fired five scoreless innings and senior center fielder Bill Bereszniewicz and freshman DH Jextin Pugh drove in two runs apiece to pace Binghamton (21-24, 11-12 America East) to a 7-3 win over host Albany (12-33, 7-17 AE) in the regular-season finale for both teams Sunday afternoon from Varsity Field.

The win, in combination with Maine’s loss to UMBC, secured the No. 3 seed for the Bearcats heading into the America East tournament. Binghamton, the defending conference champions, will face No. 2 Hartford in a 2 p.m. opening game Thursday in Lowell.

Liegi, a walk-on who made the team in a fall tryout, lowered his season ERA to 1.82 with five stellar innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out a pair before giving way to a pair of relievers. Junior Mike Bunal made his return to the lineup from an injury and allowed just one hit in 3.0 innings. Sophomore Tsuyoshi Horibata pitched the final inning.

Bereszniewicz had a two-run single to give BU a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Bearcats added two runs in the fourth on a double by Pugh. Ahead 4-0, BU tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on RBI hits from senior second baseman Daniel Nevares and freshman catcher Eddie Posavec.

Albany got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then the teams traded runs in the final two innings.
Bereszniewicz went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.
