Binghamton Mets fall to Portland Seadogs 4-1 on series finale

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets stranded ten men on base, including six over the final three innings, in a 4-1 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets settled for a four-game split with the Double-A Red Sox after winning the first two games of the series.

Portland struck in the first inning against B-Mets starter Rainy Lara. Mookie Betts started the rally with a single to right. Two batters later, Travis Shaw pulled a double off the right-field wall, his fifth two-bagger of the series. Cory Vaughn mishandled the ricochet, allowing Betts to score the first run of the game.

The Sea Dogs tacked on two more in the second. Henry Ramos lifted a fly ball to right to start the inning. Battling a stiff wind, Vaughn watched the ball sail over his head for a double. Heiker Meneses followed by dumping an RBI single into right-field. After a sac bunt, Betts bounced a single up the middle, plating Meneses with Portland's third run.

Portland starter Mike McCarthy kept the B-Mets at bay and faced the minimum through his first four innings. The righty used a pair of double plays to erase leadoff singles in the first two innings and picked off Wilfredo Tovar in a scoreless third.

Binghamton finally broke through in the fifth. After a leadoff walk to Matt Clark, Kevin Plawecki sent a bouncer to the mound. McCarthy fired to second, but Deven Marrero muffed the throw, allowing both runners to reach safely. Jayce Boyd followed with a single to load the bases. Tovar chopped a grounder to third that Meneses smothered with a dive. Tovar beat the throw to first, bringing home Clark with Binghamton's first run. McCarthy induced Ceciliani to fly out to right to limit the damage.

Lara settled in after surrendering three runs on five hits in his first two innings. The righty capped his fifth start of the season with three scoreless stanzas before handing off to Cody Satterwhite in the sixth. Satterwhite tossed two scoreless frames of relief to extend his season-opening scoreless streak to 16-2/3 innings.

McCarthy exited after posting a shutout sixth inning. Noe Ramirez took the reins and stranded two runners in the seventh after allowing back-to-back singles. Binghamton threatened with two more runners in the eighth, but failed to crack the scoreboard. Miguel Celestino allowed consecutive two-out singles in the ninth, but induced Brian Burgamy to bounce into a fielder's choice to secure his second save of the year.

McCarthy (2-2) allowed one unearned run over six innings to collect his second consecutive victory. Lara (2-1) gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits in five innings of work in his first Double-A loss.
