UPDATE: Owego Again Tables Vote on Revised Firefighters Manual
4/29/2014 (Updated 11:22:53 PM)It was a full house Tuesday in Owego, as volunteer firefighters came to see if the village board would vote for a revised operations manual which the firefighters say they need, to ensure their safety.
As was the case at the board's last meeting, the matter was tabled again.
It's still uncertain whether the firefighters will make good on their promise to walk off the job if the revised manual was not approved.
The board members say they are not rejecting it, but merely need time to study it.
Compromise--and even some criticism of firefighters was in the air, with one firefighter saying the threat to "walk" was akin to taking the ball and going home, and with another saying that progress is being made, with the board indicating that it would decide soon on adoption of the manual.
The firefighters did not walk out of the meeting--as they had earlier promised to do, but were said to be meeting at the firehouse after the meeting to discuss the situation.
The controversy over the revised manual is fueled by last year's death of Captain Matthew Porcari, who died while fighting a fire in Newark Valley.
Firefighters say a revised manual would better ensure that proper safety procedures are followed.
